patrol officers on the streets to help out the short staffed oakland police department. terry mcsweeney is at the substation to tell us how the first night went. >> reporter: this is where chp officers reported for duty last night. it is having an impact, a number of arrests, several cars impounded by chp officers on the streets of oakland. when the officers reported at 7:00 last night it took 30 minutes before there was a violent crime. look at video of the grocery outlet on 2900 broadway a man with a gun robbed the place customers were inside at the time, a customer called in that crime that is what police are hoping for, a lot of cooperation from citizens. that crime happened one day after east oakland businessman wilbur bartley was shot and killed at his store marcus

cellular the store named after his son, homicides up 20% over last. when the governor announced the chp would be helping the chief of police in oakland was happy. >> i personally thank governor brown for his quick response to my requests and my community's plea for help. >> reporter: chp spokeswoman tells me operation impact means 8 to 20 chp officers deployed to prevent crime through traffic enforcement and what she calls patrol presence. she says, the chp will be available to oakland pd whenever they call for help. the good news for oakland, a city in need of financial help as well, the chp officers come here at no cost to the city. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. muni has released surveillance video hoping someone will recognize a man who viciously beat a van ness

station agent. police say the incident happened october 10th, when the man tried to go through with a bike. the agent told him bikes were not allowed on that station. investigators say he ignored the agent jumped over with his bike and you saw the man walk didn't the stairs with that bike and a small suitcase police say the 55-year-old agent followed him and was attacked as he reached the platform. amy hollyfield will have muchmore in 30 minutes. aging sewer system -- causing nasty problem in marin county, 88,000 gallons of raw sewage overflowed in anselmo this week. a homeowner says sewage flowed behind his house for four days before it was reported. injuries say the -- engineers say the system is made up of 50-year-old clay pipe crumbling throughout san antonio sell know,

70% of stations are closed on long island. the shortage of fuel lead to one violence incident in queens. authorities arrested a motorist yesterday after he pointed a pistol at another motorist who complained when he tried to cut in line while waiting for gas. that man is facing 15 years in prison, if convicted. superstorm sandy could mean trouble for holiday shopping. retail analysts are worried department store sales could fall because people on the east coast had to spend unexpected money on supplies. macy's and bloomingdale's had to shutdown 200 stores. retail chains are expected to benefit, including home depot annual mart. parent company walt disney company announced two million dollar contribution to the victims of superstorm san we are doing everything we can, including the cash donation, plus encouraging our employees to donate on their own, which

lucky woman in southern california this morning. she had incredibly good fortune weeks before a 23 million dollar lotto prize was going to be forfeited. the winning ticket was sold at a palmdale liquor store in may, with no one claiming the prize the store released surveillance photos recognized by her daughter. the woman found the ticket after a search in her car where it has sat for five months she filed her claim yesterday. >> after you see someone on surveillance and find them it is not a good thing. >> this lady i'm sure she is happy about it. still ahead, october jobs report is out. we go live to new york city and tell you why not the exchange for this morning's opening bell as investors get ready to react. campaign spin the obama

attacked the agent he punched and kicked him several times and knocked at jen not ground. as soon as station agent stood back up the suspect continued the assault. >> reporter: here's a good look at him, police say probably 25 to 30, about six feet tall, brown hair. this happened a month ago october 10th. police are just now releasing the video. muni is hoping someone who sees the video will remember the maybe remember being there or maybe someone will recognize this man. whatever the case, they are hoping that someone will call police and help them solve this, help them find this guy. the station agent has been released from the hospital, he is still receiving medical treatment, still not 100% okay, so he hasn't been able to return to work. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. happening now operation impact underway in oakland chp units in the city to help

increase police presence and assist officers on patrols chp will provide help to oakland two days a week at no cost to the city last year the chp helped oakland police in an anti-gang operation funded with federal grants. the san mateo county sheriff's office asking for the public's help to track down two men believed to have stolen more than $700 from a -- more than $7,000 from a 7-eleven store. the men ended the store monday one distracted the cashier while his accomplice went to the rear office and stole a bag of cash. several hours later the cashier realized the money was gone. it appears support for a measure that would abolish the death penalty gaining momentum. new poll finds 45% of likely voters are in favor of prop 30 four up three points from

september, 38% against replacing capital punishment with life in prison without parole, 17% undecided. more than 50% is need ford the measure to pass. four days until election day, the release of this morning's october jobs report, could impact the race for president. katie marzullo is live in the newsroom with how the romney and obama camps are likely to spin today's report and who it is going to be better for. >> reporter: hard to say turned out to be a grey area unemployment ticked up to 7.9%, 171,000 new jobs were added. romney just issued a statement that the october report is a sad reminder that the economy is still at a standstill. the president hasn't spoken out yet about the report, surely he can spin the fact that unemployment is still under 8%. one expert says voters will likely shrug that number off. it does mean president obama faces voters with the highest unemployment rate of any
